Collection: Iqbal Hussain

Iqbal Hussain was one of Pakistan’s most compelling figurative painters, remembered for his fearless portrayal of life in Lahore’s historic inner city. A graduate of the National College of Arts, Lahore, he developed a powerful visual language rooted in realism, empathy, and social truth.

Hussain is best known for his portraits of women from Lahore’s old cultural quarters, whom he painted with dignity, restraint, and deep psychological sensitivity. His work avoided spectacle and judgement, instead offering a rare and humanising view of lives often pushed to the margins.

Alongside his portraits, Hussain also painted landscapes and still lifes, bringing to each subject a strong command of form, atmosphere, and emotional presence. His legacy remains significant within Pakistani art as an artist who transformed lived experience into enduring images of beauty, pain, resilience, and truth.

Iqbal Hussain passed away in January 2026 at the age of 75.
